The United States National Research Council, releasing the results of a two-year study, has concluded that twin trailers have slightly more accidents than single tractortrailers, but that this is offset by the fact that the use of twins means fewer vehicles on the road. The NRC said that greater use of twins would reduce the trucking industry's costs by as much as $500 million per year, but would increase highway maintenance costs by $50 million.
