• Volvo's executive vicepresident Bengt Galen announced a new gearbox range at this week's European Transport Maintenance Council conference. After more than 20 years' service, the R61 and the SR62 gearboxes are to be phased out he said, along with the SR70 box.
A completely new Volvo gearbox family will succeed them, based around a fourgear basic unit and a two-gearrange change unit matched to Volvo's 10 and 12 litre en gines. Splitter systems will also be available.
The new range-change boxes will have nine gears the splitter boxes 14.
A new power take-off system has also been developed. The latest gear boxes will be introduced gradually through the Volvo range. CM understands that initially the boxes will only be fitted to Volvo's N range trucks sold outside the UK.
