John Dennis, 42. has been appointed publicity manager of the newly formed Truck and Bus Division of British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd. He will head a new divisional publicity organization based at Leyland, Lancashire. This will establish home and overseas publicity services on a divisional level for vehicles, will also establish a special products (unit sales) publicity unit which will embrace Leyland Gas Turbines and also co-ordinate the activities of plant-based publicity units. These will continue to promote the individual names of AEC, Albion, BMC, Butec. Daimler, Guy. and Leyland Motors. The divisional organization will also control agricultural tractor publicity. Mr. Dennis was formerly deputy group publicity manager, commercial vehicles, of the Leyland Corporation. He entered the motor industry as news editor of Commercial Motor and in 1960 joined the AEC Gazette of which he subsequently became editor. He became publicity manager of AEC in 1962 and was promoted to his LMC post in 1965. Another appointment in the truck and bus division is that of T. Dawson as publicity adviser. Since 1965 Mr. Dawson has been group publicity manager (commercial vehicles) of LMC and before that has held senior publicity posts with Leyland Motors Ltd. of which he became publicity manager in 1962.

D. T. Searle has been appointed chief engineer of the Aldershot and District Traction Co. Ltd., with effect from January 1 1969 in succession to C. E. Clubb who has been appointed chief engineer of Southdown Motor Services Ltd. Mr. Searle is at present chief engineer of Southern Vectis and was previously with Lincolnshire Road Car Co. He began his career in the bus industry with Thames Valley in 1939.

John Williamson, 56, is to be the first general manager of the Port of Tyne Authority and will represent it on many organizations, including the Dock and Harbour Authorities Association and the National Association of Port Employers. Mr. Williamson was acting general manager of the Tyne Improvement Commission, which gave way to the Authority in August. L V. Pike is to succeed C. E. T. Cridland as chairman of the Transport Users Consultative Committee for the West Midland Area. Mr. Cridland retires at his own request on January 31, 1969. Mr. Pike, a member of TUCC for West Midland Area since 1951, is district organizer of the National Union of Agricultural and Allied Workers.

J. G. Holden, assistant chief engineer of Manchester City Transport since March 1967. has been appointed chief engineer.

N. R. Killip, 28, has been appointed United Biscuits Ltd. regional distribution planning manager (south). Mr. Killip was previously Freightliner terminal manager at York Way, London. G. E. Liardet, who is chairman and managing director of Simms Motor and Electronics Corporation Ltd. has been appointed as one of the vice chairmen of Joseph Lucas Ltd. which is the management company of Joseph Lucas (Industries) Ltd. Simins was acquired by Joseph Lucas Ilndustries) earlier this year.

E. G. Frey has been appointed by Centrax Gears Ltd. as sales engineer for sales of Stopmaster brakes in Europe.

John Rostron, 52. for 14 years general manager and engineer of Grimsby-Cleethorpes Transport. has been appointed to a similar position with Huddersfield Corporation Transport in succession to E. V. Dyson, who is to retire.

A.W. Payne has resigned from the council of the Institute of Materials Handling due to ill health. He will continue his work for the Institute as a member of the membership grading committee. W.H. Haugh, formerly chairman of the Scottish Division has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. Payne's resignation.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of George Horace Walker.

Mr. Walker. 73, for many years a partner in the firm of haulage contractors, F. Walker and Sons. Orstora Notts. retired four years ago.
