M6 Now Open 47) TODAY, Friday. the Minister of I Transport is due to open 33 miles of the M6 motorway between the northern end of the Stafford by-pass and Lymm in north Cheshire. When he does so, the existing Lancashire and Staffordshire sections of M6 will be linked to provide a continuous 87-mile motorway from Dunston to north of Preston.

The map on the right shows the line of the new road, its junctions with other roads, the position of service areas, and the future motorway extensions.

Two service areas on the new M6 stretch are Forte's at Keele (similar to their Charnock Richard one) and Top Rank's near Knutsford with space for 24 buses and 96 lorries. Top Rank are claiming " the largest mug of tea on the motorway "-10 oz. for 5d.—and offer a transport driver's hot meal at 4s. inclusive.

Road Plans Attacked

THE Government's road-building programme was attacked last week by Mr. Ray Gunter, M.P., president of the Transport Salaried Staff Association, as both inadequate and badly planned. In particular, he assailed the programme of building a thousand miles of motorways which, he said, was being pushed ahead at the expense of more urgently needed local improvements.

We did need a much greater mileage of motorways, said Mr. Gunter, but they would have to take account of other forms of transport—railways, ports and airports—and the need to use limited funds wisely, in some cases instituting major improvements in existing roads instead of building motorways.

Mr. Gunter said that many people had commented on the fact that the currently proposed network of motorways duplicated the "goods liner" train routes suggested in the Beeching Report. "Here is a perfect example of what happens when two organizations work in complete isolation in the same field. The experience of the nineteenth century railway boom is apparently to be repeated. This time. instead of rival railway companies wastefully providing duplicate services at huge capital cost the same thing will be done by the Ministry of Transport and the new Railways Board."
