"ROAD INVESTMENT VITAL " INCREASED investment was probably 1 more necessary in highways than in any other sector of the economy, and it was gratifying that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had spared roads from capital cuts. This was stated by Lord Mills, Minister of Power, at the anniversary luncheon of the Institute of Transport on Tuesday.

Slowing-down of investment in the railways should not materially affect their advance towards solvency. This year the British Transport Commission would be spending more than ever before on railway modernization. The eventual departure of the steam locomotive would mean the saving of some 12m.-13m. tons a year of the best-quality coal.

At present, inland and coastal transport used some 33m. tons of coal, or its equivalent in other fuels, a year.

FUEL PRICES REDUCED

THE price of petrol was on Tuesday reduced by id. a gallon and of dery by 3d. a gallon. In inner zones, standardgrade petrol now costs 4s. 2id. a gallon and dery 3s 10d.
