Brief Description of a Pair of Light Vehicles on Straightforward Lines.

TO augment the already extensive range of both passenger and lorry chassis produced by Guy Motors, Ltd., two new models have been designed and produced, to carry loads up to 25-cwt. in the one case and 30 cwt. in the other. Both vehicles are laid out on the usual straightforward lines associated with the name of Guy, and, coupled with the good workmanship for which this concern is also noted, they present thoroughly practical and economical propositions for both the small and large owner.

The 25-cwt. model is especially designed to be used as a fast delivery van or a light lorry and is capable of carrying a gross load of 32 cwt. With a wheelbase and track of 10 ft. 5 ins. and 4 ft. 9i ins, respectively and orthodox steering, the length from the back of the driver's seat to the end of the frame is 7 ft. 1 in., which, with a width of up to 5 ft. 6 ins., provides roomy accommodation for small goods. When loaded, the height to the top of the frame is 2 ft. 2i ins., and, allowing for a few inches to be taken up in the construction of the platform, it will be seen that quite a reasonable loading height can be obtained.

Turning now to a more detailed description of the various components. The engine is a four-cylinder rnonobloc h24

with the valves arranged in the inclined manner familiar with all Guy vehicles. The bore of the cylinders is 85 \nam. and the stroke is 120 nun., which provides an R.A.C. rating of 17.9 h.p. With a detachable head the valves are instantly accessible for grinding-in, and the combustion chambers can, of course, be cleaned out with ease, yet an extraordinarily efficient shape of combustion chamber is provided, arising from the disposition of the valves. The crankshaft is mounted on three substantial main bearings, likewise the camshaft, the latter being driven by helical spur gears from the forward end of the camshaft. The magneto is driven through a Simms vernier coupling from a crossshaft meshing with the camshaft pinion.

Lubrication is effected by pump and splash, the pump being driven by spiral gears from the camshaft. The pump is a gear type and is submerged in the oil In the sump. The cone clutch and gearbox are mounted unitwise with the engine, the gearbox providing four forward speeds, operated by right-hand control. The ratios are :—Top 5.5 to 1, third. 9.8 to 1, second 13.3 to 1, first 22.7 to 1 and reverse 22.7 to 1. With these ratios the vehicle is capable of a speed of about 40 m.p.h. on top gear fully laden. A spiral bevel fully floating rear axle is used.

The chassis is suspended on semielliptic springs in conjunction with 815 ram. by 105 mm. Dunlop cord tyres, singles being fitted to the front wheels and twins on the rear wheels, all being interchangeable. In addition to the usual equipment, a speedometer is fitted as standard, the drive being taken from the gearbox. An electric horn is also included in the price of £295.

The other new model in the goods range is the 30-cwt. type, which follows very, largely on the lines of the 25-cwt. model already described. The engine is rather more powerful, as it has an 88 mm. bore (instead of 85 mm.), which has the effect of increasing the R.A.C. rating to 19.2 h.p. The general layout of the valve gear is identical with that of the smaller model.

A slightly larger wheelbase (11 ft. 6 ins.) is, of course, used in order to cope with the larger load ; the track is 4 ft. 8 ins. These sizes provide a platform area of 9 ft. by 5 ft. 6 ins., the former dimension being measured from the back of the driver's seat to the end of the frame. As with the other model, the gearbox and clutch are formed in unit with the engine, the ratios being: top 6.6 to 1, third 11.8 to 1, second 16.1 to 1, and first 27.6 to 1. the reverse ratio being the same as the first gear ratio.
