Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Peter Swingter A GLASGOW haulage boss drove up to 30 hours at a time on numerous occasions without taking the required number of breaks in an attempt to raise money to pay off a £200.000 tax bill.

Ranizan Hussain, who had taken over TR Caledonian Fresh Produce of Eden Grove, East Kilbride, frequently drove a truck from Glasgow to London and back in a single day, delivering imported exotic fruits, Solihull magistrates were told.

Hussain was fined £3,400 and ordered to pay £688 costs after admitting 17 charges of driving while failing to have daily rest periods.

Dominic Green, prosecuting for Vosa. said the offences came to light during a roadside check off Junction 3 near the M5 at Birmingham.

The tachograph showed Hussain had driven between 16 and 30 hours without sufficient rest periods on 17 occasions between 12 September and 24 October last year. Green said.

Sukdip Randhawa, representing Hussain, said his client had recently taken over the business and faced a 1200,000 tax bill.

Instead of winding up the company, he decided to pay off the outstanding tax by increasing his workload.

-My client has 15 drivers but when a driver fell ill Hussain stepped in and carried on driving.

"He has already reduced the outstanding tax amount to £80,(X)0 since taking over the company."

Randhawa added: -He is an industrious owner and has since completed a refresher course on the regulations about driving hours to make sure he doesn't get into trouble again."
