Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I. Muir, Metropolitan Licensing Authority, last week, held under Section 10 (3) of the Road and Rail Traffic Act, 1933, Mr. A. S. Girle, 53 Matlock Way, New Malden, Surrey, voluntarily surrendered his licences for four vehicles.

Mr. P. D. Edwards, for Mr. Girle, said that' he operated an extensive oil-delivery business, largely to the haulage industry. He had experienced difficulty in finding reliable drivers for his associated haulage business, which, in consequence, had been allowedto decline. He was unable to run both enterprises satisfactorily and the

haulage side was at a low level.

Mr. Girle was prepared to accept the deletion of four vehicles. The Licensing Authority made an order to that effect.

USERS SAY NO TO TRAMWAY CLOSING

THE East Midlands Transport Users' Consultative Committee propose that the Grimsby-Immingham tramway should not be closed yet. In their report on the recent Grimsby public inqUiry into the British Transport Commission's proposal to close the tramway, the committee make this point and also suggest that the greatest possible pressure should be brought to bear for the building of the direct road between the' two ports.

The committee recommend that the tramway should be maintained for a time, possibly with a reduced service, and any slack should be taken up by a less frequent bus service.

This, they suggest, would provide a test of the relative attractiveness of the two methods of travel and they also say that arrangements should be made to raise tram fares to the level of bus fares where applicable.

BIG GEARBOX CONTRACT

AN order for gearboxes, worth more than £100,000, has been placed by an important northern commercial vehicle manufacturer with the David Brown Automobile Gearbox Division at Huddersfield. Four David Brown models are covered by the contract, one being the No. 557A, a 10-speed with a maximum engine torque rating of 480 lb.-ft.

The remaining three are five-speed types, the No. 557 having a rating of 350 lb.-ft., the No. 550 of 300 lb.-ft. and the No. 552 of 270 lb.-ft. It is understood that the contract was secured in face of severe competition from German manufacturers.

P.S.V.s IN 6% OF ACCIDENTS

OF road accidents incurring personal injury in 1958, 3 per cent. involved heavy goods vehicles, 14 per cent. light goods vehicles, and 6 per cent. buses and coaches. This was stated by Mr. G. R. H, Nugent, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, last week in a written reply to Mr. Barnett Janner (Soc., Leicester, North-west).

Mr. Nugent added that in future there would be greater detail about types of vehicle in accident statistics.
