Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Viercedes-Benz and MAN-ERF have gone head to head in the EGR vs 3CR debate, with fur flying over disputed figures. Dylan Gray reports.

'HE CONTINUING DEBATE ver EGR and SCR, the rival pproaches to meeting Euro-4 missions legislation, heated up his week.

Mercedes-Benz has attacked 4AN's fuel saving claims for EGR. alleging that its figures for the technology"don't stack up".

At a Mercedes-Benz press conference Nick Blake, manager of M-B's truck marketing and sales engineering division, questioned whether MAN really believed that EGR emitted 5% less CO2 than SCR and used 5% less fuel.

"The figures don't stack up," he said."For every litre of diesel burnt EGR produces 2.63kg of CO2. It is a fact that EGR produces 35% more NON than SCR."

Blake went on to claim that MAN is misleading the industry by quoting too high a figure for consumption of the AdBlue that SCR relies on. MAN claims that a truck will use 17,0(X) litres of AdBlue over a five-year period, while MercedesBenz quotes a figure of 5,444 litres, But MAN-ER1 sales and marketing director Dave Cussans has hit back at M-B, saying: "We're astonished by these accusations. MAN was a pioneer of both EGR and SCR technology — so we do know what we are talking about.

"Yes, we really do believe our EGR fuel 'claims'," he adds. "It's time manufacturers stopped squabbling over technology and joined us in letting operators get on with making their choice."
