Grain-carrying Trailer Bulk Transport of Maize THE adaptability of the trailer for accomniodating special classes of bodywork are clearly exemplified in the case of a new type of grain-carrying unit that It. A. Dyson and Co. Ltd., 76-80, Grafton Street, Liverpool, has recently placed on the market. This old-established concern has had much experience in building trailers for uncommon uses and the present example is believed to be the first of its kind to be constructed in this country. Being intended for the bulk transport of grain, it is naturally of the hopper variety, and the body is shaped so that the grain is fed to two exits on the off side.

The trailer has a capacity of approximately 550 cubic ft. and its principal dimensions are as follow :—Length, 20 ft. ; width, 7 ft.; depth of sides, 6 ft. 3 ins. ; overall height, 10 ft. The body is constructed throughout from steel sheet, and it has T-shaped upright side members, the corner members being of angle iron.

There are two discharge doors, which are placed between the front and rear wheels. The doors are coupled, being mounted on a common spindle it in. in diameter, and they are Actuated by means of a hand wheel and screw. To

avoid the possibility of leakage of the grain, the door edges have a double seal ; the size of each discharge orifice is 14 ins. square. Under each door frame are two clips, to which the discharge channel is hooked.

To facilitate the discharge of the grain, well radiused pieces of steel are fitted at a point where the sheets meet on the inside, and to ensure that the load is kept perfectly water-tight, the top is covered with canvas sheets which

have adequate overlaps ; these are held in position by heavy spring clips. To enable the sheets to be easily dealt with, a ladder is supplied, and, when not in use, this is carried in clips underneath the trailer.

The trailer is of the six-wheeled variety, each wheel being equipped with a single Dunlop solid tyre of 8-in. section. The wheels are of the cast-steel, ribbed, tubular-spoke pattern and are mounted on Timken taper-roller bearings; chromium-plated hub caps give a pleasing finish. The four rear wheels of the trailer are fitted in line, each pair being mounted on a separate axle. Each axle is secured to springs ef Woodhead manufacture, these having the maker's patent oscillating ends.

All the rear wheels are equipped with Dyson double-acting internal-expanding self-energizing brakes, which, we are told, are capable of holding the fully loaded trailer on any main-road gradient. A hand wheel and screw gear are arranged on the near side of the trailer for operating the brakes, whilst provision is also made for brake actuation from the tractor by means of a wire cable passing through a flexible steel tube. The trailer has an actual carrying capacity of about 15 tons, but this unit • will deal with 12-ton loads. It was designed particularly for the transport of maize, but is equally suitable for dealing with materials of a similar character. When the discharge doors are felly open the body can, we are told, be emptied in a little over a minute. The time taken to fill the body is, of course, dependent upon the size of the filling apparatus, but it usually occupies approximately from three to four minutes.

This trailer has been supplied to Messrs. It Silcock and Sons, of Liverpool, who, for many years, have been using trailers of Dyson make.
