THIS YEAR'S National Coat Rally at Blackpool was held miserable weather which r doubt depressed your writer much as everyone else. You vr appreciate that we have no co
trol over the weather but yo reporter's comment on the "d caying walkways of the towr Middle Walk-, where the eve is held, was a little harsh.
The Middle Walk, where tl Coach Rally is always held, at the colonnades, where spedr tors had to shelter this year, a the subject of continuir maintenance and redecoratii schemes. Every two years tl Council allocates funds for ti purpose, although it becom more and more difficult ea year to find public money I this kind of maintenance wc when inflation and cut-backs public expenditure increase a nually.
Just over 12 months ago t Council spent £13,000 on I flagging and re-surfacing t Middle Walk following exter ive damage to the areas caus mainly by the breaking up of t surface by coaches using during the annual Coach Rail) It is difficult to understa how your reporter could d scribe the area as "decayinl when it has been so recen refurbished.
Some years ago the ent area was refurbished and colonnades furnished to a hi standard in teak and plate gla Regrettably within two years teak had been damaged beyc repair and the glass pane which enclosed the colonnad had to be removed because constant breakage by vandal: If the present financial r traints on public expend& were not so severe, we wo spend even more money achieve the standards which know that our visitors exp and deserve.
