Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CM has made some initial tests on the DIP Metal Hygiem rust-removing product recently announced in this country.

This product, invented in Norway by Emil Bratland in response to the Norwegian Government's ban on the use of acids, uses a "biological" process instead of the etching process normally used in rustpreventive techniques.

It is available in two forms — a solution which is diluted with six parts of water and used in a tank, and a jelly, to which is intended to hold the activating agent, water, in contact with the item to be treated. CM tried the latter.

In general it proved effective, though some of the company's claims were a little difficult to substantiate. CM found that it was essential to keep the jelly wet in order fo. it to work properly — but thi; is no disadvantage for ; general cleaning-down opera tion.

The substance is harmless ti skin and clothes, which make it convenient to work with and as it is repelled by greas( it can be used fearlessl; around bearings. It can also b used without differentiatio. on steel and alloys. This is c particular interest in mino restoration work where it i not intended to dismantl assemblies completely.

It is available from DJ Metal Hygiene Products, 5 Gavinton Street, Glasgow G9 3HT.
