Semperit is building 2000 commercial vehicle tyres a week in Vienna — a proportion of which leaves the factory under another brand name. About 20 per cent are used as original equipment by a number of makers.
Semperit sees the future as developing in the low-profile tyre market. The spokesman indicated that further research into tyre construction would continue with fuel conservation in mind and would lead to another new tyre using different materials — but he was unwilling to divulge details.
An American representative of Semperit said that the American market was experiencing the same delayed replacement problems as those in Europe.
The Austrian company is also building light van tyres at a factory set up recently in the outskirts of Dublin.
It was suggested that this was done with economy in mind, since property is less expensive than in Britain.
Line management for the new factory has come from Irishmen employed in British factories who have spent two years training in Austria.
