THE Transport Tribunal do not think that transport facilities in the Peterborough area will be more than adequate in the foreseeable future. This was stated by the president last week, when Contractors (Peterborough), Ltd., appealed against the refusal of the Eastern Licensing Authority to grant them an A licence for three vehicles.
Mr. M. Holmes, for the concern, said that the company's business had risen meteorically since they had come into the A-licence field in July, 1954. Taking the earnings for the first quarter as a guide, the revenue for a full year would be £14,000, an average of 1609 per ton.
"This company is earning more at the present time by work done by hire than work done by its own vehicles," said Mr. Holmes. Even if three more vehicles were obtained, some hiring would still have to be done. There were fewer vehicles available in Peterborough today than before nationalization.
Mr. James Amphlett, for the British Transport Commission, said that there was no evidence of need for extra vehicles in the area. Witnesses called by the concern had said, in the main, that they were satisfied with the service they received.
The Tribunal granted one extra vehicle.
BALLAST DRIVERS' NEW PAY
WAGES of drivers of ancillary VI( vehicles in the sand and ballast industry have been revised. The wages committee of the National Joint Council for the Ballast and Sand Industry have agreed that in the first full pay period following June 11, Class 1 drivers of vehicles under 12 tons gross laden weight shall be paid 3s. 51d. an hour and of vehicles over 12 tons, 3s. 6/d. an hour.
Class 2 drivers of vehicles under 12 tons will receive 3s. 41d. an heur, and over 12 tons, 3s. 5/d.
Employers paying higher rates may be exempted from such portion of the increase as i& already in operation.
