Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

franchise 'for certain makes of vehicle or trailer and feel obliged to provide some emergency arrangement. For these, a night telephone number is often sufficient, so long as it carries with it the understanding that a telephone call from a stranded trunker with a vehicle or trailer covered by the franchise will indeed result in someone turning out to give assistance.

A fairly common complaint by heavy recovery specialists, who are not listed here unless they have been mentioned by a vehicle manufacturer (but advertisements on pages 79-81 list some). is that operators do not take the trouble that they should over emergency service. An article in this issue covers the point with some force, and it is a fair one. Rut after-sales service is one of the best selling points for a manufacturer, and it pays him to encourage his franchise-holders to offer at least an emergency telephone number for operators in trouble.

The facilities listed here are given in alphabetical order of makes. the dealers being shown town by town, alphabetically; principal abbreviations common to all entries are given below: additional abbreviations applied to certain makes are mentioned under the respective make names. Principal abbreviations

(24) = 24-hour service provided (qualified where appropriate, e.g. (24) Mon.-Sat, or (24) br. for breakdown).

sp. = spares available (usually indicates hours that stores open).

se. = service (usually linked here with time of availability).

br. = breakdown service (included only where manufacturers

have specifically mentioned it. In some cases, " service " may include breakdown or simply the availability of workshop staff).

em. tel. = emergency telephone number.

wkd. -= weekdays.

For example (24) se. Mon.-Fri. and to 5 p.m. Sat. and 4 p.m. Sun.; (24) hr.; sp. to 9 p.m. wkd, to 5 p.m. Sat, and 4 p.m. Sun.; tel (sp., se., br.): Carlisle 24234.

This means there are service facilities on a 24-hour basis from Monday to Friday and up to 5 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday respectively, there is a 24-hour breakdown recovery service, while spares can be obtained up to 9 p.m. on weekdays and up to 5 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The telephone number for all these services is Carlisle 24234.
