by Mr. S. W. G. Ostle, of Kirkby Stephen, Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, the Northern Licensing Authority, gave a warning about longdistance drivers who worked beyond their permitted hours. The L.A. said he would not allow lorries and drivers to "bash their way up and down the Great North Road" doing more hours than they should.
, Mr. Ostle had said that he did not know where his drivers spent their nights, although they always claimed overnight allowances. Mr. Hanlon commented that drivers should be obliged by law to provide evidence of where they had stayed and for how long. He granted a short-term licence to Mr. Ostle and asked him to supply information about his drivers and how he ensured that they kept to their proper hours.
