MR. S. H. JARDINE who, after nearly 21 years, is retiring on March 31 from the position of secretary of the Metropolitan and South Eastern Area of the Road Haulage Association, is to receive a presentation at a luncheon at Grosvenor House, London, early in April.

MR. R. G. EMMETT has been reelected chairman and MRS. DORIS CLARK vice-chairman of the London -.and Home Counties Centre of the Motor and Cycle Trades Benevolent Fund. Miss M. BUTCHER has been succeeded by Miss Cr. M. HORNER as honorary secretary. MR. G. SELWYN Small is honorary treasurer.

MR. H. W. 'HATTERSLEY who, as reported in The Commercial Motor on January, 18, has retired from his post as sales director of Dennis Bros., Ltd., has joined the board of the Commercial Motor Garage and Repair Co., Ltd., Dennis distributors. Before becoming sales Manager of Dennis in 1939, Mr. Hattersley was managing director of Karrier Motors, Ltd: He was elected to the Dennis board in 1949. He is chairman of the heavy-vehicle section Of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

MR. A. WASS, rolling stock superintendent of Sunderland Transport Department, is to retire.

NEW EAST KENT DEPOT

A NEW vehicle maintenance depot 1-'t has been built by the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., at Westwood. Its main feature is a sunken space over which steel and concrete rafts project to form three pits. Offices and stores, containing 2,300 types of spare part are included.

Outside is an electric hoist on which vehicles can be raised for steamcleaning and spray painting.

NO BAN ON CARS THE Minister of Transport refused I last week to ban the entry of cars into London to maintain the improvement in bus running which fuel rationing has brought about.

The Road Research Laboratory and the Ministry of Transport are investigating the effects of fuel 'rationing on London traffic. They are to report to the Minister as soon as possible.

State Coach-Air Link with Private Airline

THE Scottish Omnibuses Group is to co-operate with Manx Airlines, Ltd.., in summer coach-air services to be introduced between Scotland and Belfast and the Isle of Man on June I. Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., will carry passengers on the services from the terminus in Bothwell Street, Glasgow, with picking-up points at , Ayr and Kilmarnock, to Castle Kennedy Airport, Stranraer, 75 miles away. The other companies in the group will provide links from other parts of Scotland.

In Northern Ireland, the Ulster Transport Authority will supply the road link from Newtownards Airport to the centre of Belfast. In the Isle of Man, the terminal point is Ronaldsway Airport.

The Belfast service will Lake 4 hours 55 minutes, 17 minutes of which will be spent in the air. The overall journey time to the Isle of Man will be 4 hours 25 minutes (25 'minutes in the air). The adult monthly return fare on each service will be £4 16s. 6d.

At first there will be four services a week—on Fridays, . Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays--to each destination, but more Will be provided if they are found necessary.

Manx Airlines are associates of Lancashire Aircraft Corporation, Ltd., who, with Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., pioneered coach-air services between Blackpool and the Isle of Man six years ago.

DOORS REDUCE ACCIDENTS

THERE had been a large reduction in

the number of platform accidents since the fitting of doors on their buses some years ago, Mr. W. Leese, general manager of Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., said last week.

Driver-controlled electrically operated folding doors are a feature of the Leyland-M.C.W. double-deckers which are now being delivered to the company. Another feature is the provision of heaters in both saloons. The last six of an order for 34 of these buses 'will be placed in service on March 1.

OBITUARY

WE regret to record the deaths of MR. FRANCIS GEORGE STEAD, MRS. MARY POSSLEY (nee STACEY), and MR.. EDWIN ARTHUR COLLIS.

Mr. Stead, who was 84, was senior director of F. a Stead and Son, Ltd., Madeley, a haulage company which he founded in 1920.

Killed in a road accident last week, Mrs. Possley was a director and traffic manager of Graham Adams, Ltd., New Malden. She joined Adams Bros. Super Transport, Ltd., 20 years ago and was for a time with British Road Services.

Mr. Collis was the chairman of the Willenhall Motor Radiator Co., Ltd.
