The Vehicle Remarketing Association predicts severe supply problems will continue in the light CV market throughout 2012

Words: Kevin Swallow

WHILE PRICES for second hand vans remain strong, the Vehicle Remarketing Association (VRA) says a lack of defleeted vehicles entering the market is likely to last throughout 2012.

VRA chairman John Davies says: “The market continues seemingly unabated with prices remaining at near record levels across most segments. Given the ongoing severe shortage of used models, this is predicted to continue well into 2012 and probably right through to the end of the year.” Van operators might create a spike in the volume of older vans coming to market as they rush to replace them with vehicles to meet the changes to London’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ).

John Lewis, chief executive of the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association, says it might not make economic sense for operators to buy new or spend thousands fitting a filter for one or two trips to London. “They could hire a modern, LEZ-compliant van (or truck) for a fraction of the cost of the LEZ fee.” ■
