Merryweather Points.

A Merryweather electrically-propelled fire-engine was put at the disposal of the Cnionist candidates, at Greenwich and Deptford, during the recent elections. Our photograph shows Mr. Arthur Maryon, the company's chief engineer and designer, at the wheel. We understand that this machine has been wholly constructed in England, and that it is the first of a type which will be vigorously pushed by the Green‘lich company. One Hears— The St. Helens (Lanes.) Watch Committee is on the point of placing its order for a motor fire-engine, and we understand that the claims of a Salford maker are strongly favoured.

Barrow to Borrow £7,500.

Barrow-in-Furness is about to erect. and equip a new fire station, and the proposed loan of £7,500 will cover the purchase of a combination motor fireengine. Application has been made to the Local Government Board.

A Surrey District's Danger.

Beddington (Surrey) Parish Council has held a meeting in committee with regard to the present agreement for fire protection with the Wallington Parish Council, and which agreement expires on the 31st December, 1911. Attention was drawn to the rapid growth of the district, and to the fact that the Purley portion is practically unprotected. In the case of a serious fire, the present appliances would be wholly inadequate, especially having regard to the extensive and hilly nature of the district where a horsedrawn engine is almost useless. With regard to the north district the appliances at present would be of verylittle service except as first-aid ; there are, in this neighbourhood, large houses which would require the use of an escape; also, there is an orphanage accommodating about 250 persons, in addition to the Warehousemen's, Clerks and Drapers' Schools, feeto ies, etc. Should a fire occur in any of these buildings and the occupants be driven to the upper storeys, there is no appliances at present which could be utilized for the purpose of saving life_
