Transport Bill

INTENSIVE efforts are being made by the Trades Union Congress i and the Labour Party to organize public opinion against the Transport Bill before Parliament reassembles on October 14. The first phase of the campaign starts on August 31 with \a public demonstration at Margate, to be addressed by Mr. Herbert Morrison, M.P., and Mr. Arthur Deakin, general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union. It ends with another demonstration at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on October 13, the day before Parliament reassembles.

Between, these dates, conferences will be held in London, Derby, Southampton, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle-onTyne, Cardiff and Norwich. Others are to take place in Plymouth and Edinburgh.

In most regions, the conferences will be followed by demonstrations on the next day. Mr. C. R. Attlee, M.P., will speak at a meeting in Manchester. The T.U.C. general council is urging unions to bring home to their branches the importance of making a success of the protest campaign and of co-operating in any arrangements which may be made with the Labour Parties in their locality.

The demonstration at Margate on August 31, the day before the T.U.C. annual congress begins, will be held at the Winter Gardens at 2.30 p.m. Tickets, price Is., can be obtained from Mr. T. J. Newnham, 56, Perkins Avenue, Margate.

The date of the Plymouth conference has not yet been decided, but the Edinburgh meeting is to take place on September 20, and will be followed on September 21 by a public demonstration against the Transport Bill.

The Road Haulage Association has not organized comparable meetings in favour of denationalization, but private meetings of members to discuss the Transport Bill are being held. There were one at Wolverhampton and one at Reading on Wednesday. It has been arranged for a member of the ad hoc committee which is negotiating with the Minister of Transport on the Bill, or Mr. R. Morton Mitchell, chief

executive officer, to be present. A30 BRITISH SECTION IN TORONTO EXHIBITION

THERE will be a special British motor industry section, organized by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, in the Canadian National Exhibition to be held in Toronto from August 22-September 6.
