For the AE Magnum range the uprating of the six-cylinder engine also filled the yawning gap between the original 275kW (369hp) model and its 370kW (496hp) Mack-powered big brother.

Nominal power ratings of 385, 420 and 530 horsepower are now on sale.

Bore and stroke dimensions are identical, as are the rocker cover, sump and oil filtration system.

But everything else is new including the five-hole injectors. Also modified are the inlet and exhaust characteristics. An uprated turbocharger delivers 30% more air than before. Renault claims fuel consumption improvements of 5% with a 33% improvement in durability

• One year ago Renault began supplying Magnum and Major trucks fitted with the new "ACE" engine (CM 2-8 April 1992).

Commercial Motor was the first UK publication to try out the smoother, more economical 12litre unit in 283kW (380hp) form. Renault VI UK's recent Magnum Roadshow gave us the chance to sample the new 420ti-badged version at 38 tonnes. In this guise the ACE engine produces 305kW (409hp) at 2,000rpm and 1,980Nm (1,4601bffi of torque at 1,200rpm.

ACE (Advanced Combus:ion Engine) replaced the MIDR engine range.

Renault combined a number of updates with changes necessary to achieve Euro-1 emissions certification.

The modifications also pave the way to Euro-2 and beyond. The 420ti has the latest generation MPZ 2400 twin-plate clutch, first introduced to handle the hiked torque from the vee-eight. and the newest, larger 1)3 disc brakes.
