Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Scottish Traffic Commissioners have 'granted permission to David MacBrayne Ltd. to increase certain bus fares by an average of 8.75 per cent. The increases will apply from Sunday (April 17).

The application was opposed by the County Councils of Inverness, Ross and Cromarty, and Argyll.

Mr. J. Cameron, manager of the applicant's road services, said that the increases were necessary to offset losses being incurred by the company and would mean an extra id. or 2d. on each fare affected.

He agreed with Mr. F. F. Bruce, for the objectors, that this was the second increase in nine months, totalling almost 17 per cent. But if the increases were granted, there would still be a loss to the company for this year of £57,000 and for next year £47,300.

Asked by Mr. Bruce why the nationalized Scottish Bus Group could estimate a profit of 2+cl. per mile, whereas MacBrayne estimated a loss of lfel. per mile, even with the increases, Mr. Cameron said that the Group operated in populous areas and his company did not.
