The Commercial Motor Lorry Driver of the Year Competition is to lose one of its most valued old-timers. Bernard Hale, who was organising secretary of the Portsmouth contest from its inception in 1954, is retiring soon and is resigning from the competition. His quiet wisdom will be missed in the executive council and I shall lose a friend of 25 years' standing.

Bernard has for years been in charge of the Highway Code examination at the final and has become known to thousands of drivers from all over the country. He saw the Portsmouth contest smoothly through the change to Hampshire region and to its magnificent site at the army camp at Bordon — a far cry from the desperate improvisation of a quarter of a century ago.

Bernard is in every sense a gentleman and it is difficult to believe that he had a long career as a police officer in a tough naval city.
