FARE frauds on Edinburgh city buses are costing Lothian Region an estimated £600,000 a year. And that, according to the transport department, could be enough to cut future fare increases by about five per cent.

But the days of the dodger may soon be over, as the Region's director of public transport, Charles Evans, warned that special watches have been put on city bus routes to catch wayward passengers who are presenting forged or out-of-date bus passes, or try to travel further than they have paid for.

Now all bus inspectors and drivers have been specially briefed on the methods to be used in challenging and reporting passengers they suspect of fraud.
