Eight-wheelers "Banned" by 22-ton Limit?

FROM A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT iROPOSALS for maximum weights

and dimensions for commercial hides have been made by the Cornssion of the European Economic ,mmunity. These proposals have been it to the Council of Ministers. I derstand that the Commission feels ongly that urgent action is needed. le Benelux countries earlier this year .ved notice (as they are required to do) it on October 1 they intended to plement new regulations dealing with se limits, and were subsequently rsuaded to wait until January 1, next. le Commission wants a decision by

At the moment, there are three ferent sets of regulations within the immon Market; France and Germany ply one set of maxima, the Benelux untries a second set, and the Italians third set. The proposals made last :ek by the Commission are felt to be a mpromise between the three sets of ;ulations. It is recommended that all w vehicles should comply with the prosals (if accepted) by January 1, 1965, d that all vehicles should comply by nuary 1, 1975.

Three things which are noticeable to itish operators in the Commission's oposals are lack of provision for eightkeeled goods vehicles, no extra weight -tit for twin-oscillating axles, and a iximum height.

It is suggested, for the moment, that !. proposals would apply to intertional traffic. If the Council of inisters issue a directive, then member untries should bring their legislation .o line by the end of next year. The immission has also asked the Council consider harmonization of other :hnical matters. It is believed, for itance, that by the end of this year the iminission Will make proposals con-ning minimum power/weight ratios. The maximum lengths proposed are: r all rigid vehicles, 12 m. (approx. 39 ft. in.); " articulated vehicles with one lifer," 15 m. (approx. 49 ft. 3 in.); irticulated vehicles with more than one iffer," 17.2 m. (approx. 56 ft. 4 in.). aximurn width proposed is 2.5 m. iprox. 8 ft. 2} in.—the current British .v. width). Maximum height proposed 4 m. (approx. 13 ft. 2 in.—

there is no height restriction in Britain).

So far as maximum weights are concerned, limits of 10 metric tons (approx. 9.8 tons) for single axles and 16 metric tons (approx. 15.7 tons) for tandem axles are proposed. For two-axle vehicles a gross weight of 16 metric tons is proposed, with 22 metric tons (approx. 21.7 tons) for vehicles with more than two axles. For "articulated vehicles with one trailer," a limit of 36 metric tons (approx. 35.4 tons) is proposed, and for "articulated vehicles with more than one trailer," a limit of 38 metric tons (approx. 37.3 tons) is envisaged.
