Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

[WILL the R.A.F. make it a double? By VV next Sunday, afternoon we shall know who is Lorry Driver of the Year For 1962. but with last year's winner, Corporal D. M. Readrnan, of R.A.F., Gaydon. in the running again the haulage and C-licence entries will need to be on their toes. Corporal Readman has a special incentive as he is the fourth national winner to defend his title a second year and none of his predecessors has succeeded in retaining it. It is five years since the last haulage driver, W. 'limns, won the title. In fact, only two have ever won it. Perhaps a haulage

man will succeed in 1962? .

As usual, the final will be in two parts. Competitors will make the first round in their own vehicles in their respective classes. Class winners from this round will then take part in the run-off in identical vehicles, which this year will be three lorries provided by Rootes Motors,

Ltd. The winner of this run-off will be Lorry Driver of the Year.

The four tests which will decide the final are shown in the diagrams below. The kerb parking and width judgment follow the lines made familiar in the eliminating heats, though the width test has been made trickier by having 6-ft. and 9-ft. barriers (to C and D) instead of equal-length barriers as hitherto. The loading bay test has been considerably altered, the bay no longer being at rightangles to the road; in this and the kerb parking the "end stop" line will be altered in position according to vehicle length. Times taken in both these tests will be used in calculating results; so may the times in the other two tests.

The snooker test is the new one this year: coloured balls have to be dislodged from stands with the nearside front wheel in a set sequence and, as recorded below, penalties can be severe.

This final round of the competition starts 'at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 16, at the Massey-Ferguson works, Banner Lane, Coventry. The Minister of Transport will present the prizes at about 5 p.m. He will also present the awards for the Historic Commercial Vehicle Rally, which is being run on the same day, the tests being held on a car park adjacent to the Lorry Driver Competition ground.

There will not be a driving-cab competition this year.
