THE Government should spend on the roads the money that the transport industry pays in taxation. I do not mean all the taxation, because we think the tax on fuels should go, but they should take the money paid in vehicle taxation. This 'would ease the problem considerably and reduce the number of casualties."

This was stated by Mr. Frank Coyle, of the Transport and General Workers' Union, at the conference of the Trades Union Congress at Brighton, last week. He was supporting a resolution noting the inadequacy of the road system and the number of deaths caused by its deficiencies.

Mr. Coyle said that automation in industry would be useless without efficient transport. At the present time, lorry and bus drivers were undergoing "intense strain" during their working hours because of bad road conditions. With a freer flow of traffic, there would also be much less atmospheric pollution in large towns.

Mr. G. Green, general secretary of thc Civil Service Clerical Association, sponsored the resolution and stated that the 'high Cost" of moving goods by road added to the cost of living. 11 that expense could be reduced to any great extent, it would he of assistance in reducing living costs.

The resolution was passed unanimously BRISTOL INDUSTRIES' £140,000 • OUTLAY
