EASTHAM BYPASS, designed to divert heavy tankers from Eastham village, could be ready for traffic by next April — 10 weeks ahead of schedule — Councillor Dave Allen, chairman, told Win-al Traffic Sub-committee.

The new road will give traffic from the oil installations at Eastham direct access to the M53 by a junction built originally to serve Vauxhall Motors.

The work of strengthening the rocker assemblies on the M4 Severn Bridge should be substantially completed early in the new year subject to weather conditions the Department of Transport announced.

Special traffic arrangements are in force: at peak periods all four lanes are open to traffic, but with heavy vehicles held back until the queues have dispersed. These arrangements will continue until the work is complete.

Secretary of State for Wales John Morris has accepted the £10,519,410 tender of George Wimpey and Co Ltd /Fairclough Civil Engineering Ltd Consortium for the construction of the Castleton-Coryton section of M4.

The route skirts the northern suburbs of Cardiff between the A470 trunk road and the Tredegar Park-St Mellons section of M4, currently nearing completion.

Work on the new section is expected to start shortly and will take about two years. It will include the construction of about 12 Km (7.5 miles) of dual two-lane motorway; 0.9 Km (0.56 miles) of slip roads; and improvements to and diversion of nearly 5 Km (3.1 miles) of side roads. Structures will include 12 bridges, two footbridges, one pedestrian subway and five farm and service subways, and the contract includes the provision of road traffic signs and motorway communications system..

Mr Morris has also authorised Gwynedd County Council as his agents to invite tenders for the improvement of part of the A470 trunk road at Teiliau Isaf, Ffestiniog, from a point north of Teiliau Isaf. in a southerly direction for a distance of approximately 1,200m to link with the section of highway recently widened on the outskirts of Ffestiniog. Approximately 300m will form part of a diversion to the east of Teiliau Isaf.

A new scheme provides for the construction' of a 7.3m-wide carriageway and 3.5-wide verges.

Mr Morris has accepted the the £108,959 tender of F. G. Whitley & Sons for major maintenance work on the A5 trunk road at Waterloo Bridge, Betws-y-coed.

The DTp has accepted a £859,000 tender from Peter Lind & Co for the improvement of the A38 at Trethawle, Cornwall. Work will start shortly and take about 18 months to complete.

The DTp has also accepted the tender of £3,848,863 from Mears Construction for the improvement of the A10 trunk road between Southery and South Runcton, Norfolk, a distance of about 11 miles (17.7 km). Work is expected to start soon and take about two years to complete.
