THERE is a better feeling in trade now than there has been since the early part of this year. A common feature of all reports is the reference to the need for prompt delivery. "Buyers pressing for prompt delivery" is a typical proviso.

North-East Coast.

The cold weather has already had a marked influence on the house-coal trade and on the demand for gas coals and coke. Local hauliers should note. Sunderland Corporation is to carry out alterations to Ashburn House, Backhouse Park, and has entrusted the work to Randle and Co., Ltd., Sunderland. Blyth Town ,Council is to build 50 houses on the South Farm Estate.

Newcastle Corporation has instructed R. Barron and Co., Ltd., Coundon, Bishop Auckland, to erect 198 houses on the Ferguson's Lane housing estate. Mr. .1. Hetherington, 470, Westgate Road, Newcastle-on-Tyne, is to build 150 houses on the Sentswood Estate ; and -Mr. H. Kindred," Roseville," Sunniside, Newcastle-on-Tyne, is to erect 158 houses and 94 bungalows on the Starafordham Estate.

Yorkshire.

There appears to be a demand for transport facilities between Yorkshire and Leicester for hosiery yarns. Pontefract Corporation is inquiring for tenders for the erection of a pumping station at Eggborough.

Messrs. Ball and Thomas, 12, Brankingham Terrace, Norton-on-Tees, are to build 12 houses in Ripon.

Messrs. Metcalf Bros., Cunningham Road, Doncaster, and Messrs. Kennard and Marsden, Argyle Street, Hull, are arranging building contracts in Scarborough. • Messrs. J. H. Carr and Sons, Selby, are to build a new ward to the Selby Hospital. Haslam, Ltd., Doncaster, is to erect 100 houses on the Wakefield Road site.

Messrs. E. Brown and Son, 98, Barnsley Road, Wath-upon-Dearne, are to erect 20 bungalows, and Messrs. G. H. Smith and Sons, Mexborong-li, are to build a nurses' hostel at the Montague Hospital, Mexboromdi, Lancashire and Cheshire.

The termination of the cotton strike has given a fillip to the timber trade ; reports from Liverpool are that there are plenty of orders, mostly small. A similar report is to hand from Manchester. Preston Rural District Council has passed plans for 217 houses; 107 are for the Grove Park Estate, Longton, and 38 are on the Victoria Park Estate, Blackpool Road, Lea. J. Cryer and Sons, Ltd., Fleetwood, is to build 100 houses at Flakefields housing estate. E. Wood and Co., Trafford Park, is to build a new stand for the Manchester United Football Club.

Mr. A. 0. Thomas, 'Wheatfield Street, Lancaster, is to build a hospital block of 12 wards at the Weatmorland Sanatorium, Meathop, near Grange-overSands. Clough and Gaskell, Ltd., Bilbruge Road, Spring Bank, Wigan, is to build 98 houses. Midlands.

From some of the boot and shoe factories come reports that the demand is better than for some months past. Knitted fabrics are in great demand, and makers of outer wear of this material are busy. In Leicester it is the underwear departments that are providing loads for hauliers. Hosiery factories in Leicester and Nottingham district report receipt of substantial orders. It is believed that large stocks of materials imported prior to imposition of duty are at an end and that business will now grow.

A considerable accession to local haulage in Leicester and Nottingham areas is likely to follow this week's Textile Exhibition.

There is a greater activity in the Potteries: it is not clear whether the improvement is likely to be permanent or due to Christmas orders, Bainbridge, Ltd., Bank Chambers, Scot Lane, Doncaster, is to build 48 houses. R. J. Jewell and Son, Ltd., of Wheelergate, Nottingham, is to build eight houses at South Wilford, and Messrs. W. Foster and Son, 41, Castlegate, Grantham, are to build 16 houses, eight at Bingham and eight at Radcliffe, whilst Mr. G. Rowley, of Brimington, near Chesterfield, is to build 29 houses. M. J. Gleason, Ltd., of 822, Chesterfield Road, Wooclseats, Sheffield, is to build 19 houses in Walgrove Road, Chesterfield.

Wales.

Mr. J. Jones, of Blackbridge, Holyhead, is to build houses on the Maescaled housing site. Pembrokeshire Education Committee has authorized W. H. Phillips and Son, Tenby, to proceed with additions to the County School, Pembroke.

East Anglia.

Mr. T. .1. Jupp, Wished], is to build 21 houses on the Bassett site at Walsoken. A number of houses is to be built on land in Flixton Road, Bungay ;, the builders will probably be Mr. W. A. Miles, Bungay, and Messrs. Hipperson and Sons, Beceles.

Scotland.

R. and W. Watson, Ltd., paper maker, of Linwood, Renfrewshire, is experiencing a big demand.

West Country.

A new paper mill is shortly to be opened at Keynsham, near Bristol, The company concerned is the Keynsharn Paper Mills, Ltd., and the original subscribers are Messrs. F. G. Robinson and N. G. Gibson, of Reddiffe Street, Bristol. Newton Abbot Rural District Council has accepted the tenders of a number of builders to build houses at Lustleigh. Messrs. E. H. Bradley and Sons are to build 64 houses to the order of the Farrington Gurney (Somerset), Rural District Council.

London and Home Counties.

Hat makers at Luton and St. Albans report increased business. F.IVI., Ltd. (Denton) Milts, Gravesend, is increasing its establishment in order to cope with demand for a new wrapping paper.

The timber trade shows a further improvement; users' stocks have run out. Messrs. J. Parsons and Sons, Swanage, are to build eight houses at Broadmayne and eight at Maiden Newton. A school is to be erected in Colindale for Hendon Education Committee. The builders are Messrs. H. H. and F. Ron, 87, High Street, Epsom.

A Baptist Memorial Hall is to be erected in Stough, Bucks, by W. Gradwell and Co., Ltd.
