The money had not, up to Saturday last, reached London. for transfer to our account. We understand that the gift is divided between the company, the president of the company, the treasurer of the company, and its staff.

An Acknowledgment on Behalf of the Ambulance Men.

The Editor has been pleased to receive the following testimony, in the course of an autograph letter, from the Hon. Arthur Stanley, M.V.0,, M.P., chairman of the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross Society and of the Order of St. John of Jeru

salem in England Dear Shrapnell-Sinith hear that a share of the comforts sent out by your COMMERCIAL MOTOR Campaign Comforts Fund finds ite way to our Ambulance Units and Convoys, and in the name of our drivers and orderlies I beg to offer to you sincere and grateful thanks.

• ` I am glad to hear that there is every prospect of your being able to continue the excellent work which you have done during the past year, and are now doing—Yours very sincerely,

"ARTHUR STANLEY."

Help for the Fund.

The foregoing testimony to one branch only of our organization, as regards its welcome character, should go far, and particularly no with the general public, to enforce the point that tens of thousands of men who benefit are by no means " 6s.-a-day " men. We ha.ve always regretted the adoption of this excuse by people who overlook our Fund in favour of other funds, partly because-of the unjust character of the criticism. There are now upwards of 25,000 men in the Army Service Corps. KT., Columns., who get only is. M. a, day, and the development of the organization of this huge arm of the Army, in accordance with which organization Field Ambulance Units and Motor Ambulance Convoys are increasingly being brought under its wing; as regards maintenance for service and share of benefits, must surely commend our Campaign Comforts Fund to many who have, if reluctantly, withheld their support from it hitherto.

More Help Coming.

We undersiand that several itmoortant companies in the motor industry are to consider their donations to our Fund at board meetings which will take place during the next few weeks. Help from the industry is as valuable to us as more-diversified support from private donors. Now is the time of times to help, with the winter a-head. So great, is the disorganization of civil life at, points where scores oftthe M.T. Columns are halted for long periods, that individual purchases on the spot can only be made with the

1340 utmost difficulty, if at all, and with a degree of irregularity that is not easily apprehended.

No Extravagance.

We have already pointed out that our average expenditure per man is less over a year than the total of one day's pay for the best-paid men. This ratio must dispose of any genuine feelings of doubt as to our being free from any guiltiness of extravagant outlay. The surprising fact remains, despite the low individual expenditure, that testimony to the appreciation with which the gifts are received is general. Cash Donations : 2nd9th inst.
