Representing the TL range is a 83m (1511n) wheelbase TL 860, ited for operation at the maxi mum non-hgv weight of 7.5 tons. This model features the new 5.4-litre turbocharged Red Series diesel developing 80kW (108bhp) net at 2,600rpm.

The TL medium-duty range introduced last year incorporates a number of specification improvements and refinements for the 1982 model year. All models now include an insulated gear lever and improved double-well construction gear-lever gaiter. To reduce in-cab noise, the engine air-intake has also been repositioned on all models powered by the Blue Series diesel.

The temperature-sensing declutching engine fan, which is standard with the turbocharged engines, is made available on the naturally aspirated models as part of an optional noise-insulation package. Recirculatingball power-assisted steering, which is already standard on the TL 1470 and TL 1630, becomes standard on TL 1260 and optional on all other TL models (except for the lighter 3.6-litre petrol variants).

An anti-roll bar option is now available on TL 1470 and TL 1630 and a new five-function Rubbolite tail lamp cluster (stop, tail, indicator, reverse and fog. guard) is standard on all models. The standard driver's seat with adjustable backrest continues to be available with or without the Bostrom suspension unit and the high-back Bostrom driver's seat option is now trimmed in Bedford beige plaid cloth.

Turbocharged Red Series and Blue Series diesel engines new extend throughout the TL range as an alternative to the naturally aspirated diesels.

Representing the TK range is a High-Spec TK 1260 3.04m (120in) short-wheelbase tipper chassis, rated for operation at 12.6 tonnes gvw. Power train is the naturally-aspirated 5.4-litre Bedford diesel 73kW (98bhp) at 2,600rpm optional-five-speed Turner overdrive gearbox with Bedford's fully floating hypoid rear axle.

The Bedford TK — nearly 600,000 have been produced — continues alongside the TL, offering the cost-conscious operator outstanding value for money. TK covers a range of 36 models offering a combination of gvw, wheelbase, engine and driveline configurations.

DAF TRUCKS 125 Scotia DAF Trucks Ltd West Mains Industrial Estate Grangemouth DAF TRUCKS introduced a further engine option for the F2800 Series last year. The vehicle can be seen for the first time on a Scottish exhibition stand. The DKSE is fitted with the newly designed economy version of the DKS engine. It has been in production for nine years, but DAF Trucks developed the DKSE engine with improved torque characteristics at lower engine revs. The torque at 1,300rpm is 1,260Nm (9291bft).

Use of the most efficient range of engine revolutions ensures that fuel consumption remains at its most economical while the higher torque available reduces the amount of gear changing required.

Basically, the DSK1160 and the DKS 1160E engines are the same 11.6-litre, six-cylinder, turbocharged and charge-cooled diesel engine, but offer quite different characteristics. The DKSE engine was developed to provide greater economy than was obtained with the DKS, DAF Trucks features prominently on DAF Servicecover, a premium operator support service, combining proven aspects of the existing back-up plus some new ones. Servicecover ensures that the DAF truck operator has available to him a broad range of support services available through the extensive DAF Trucks dealer network. Each dealer workshop within the network has been selected for its strategic location and developed to DAFs' own standards for tooling and equipment.

A terminal link on the stand, direct to the IBM computer at Marlow hq, advises on parts availability and also provides operators with instant quotations on repair and maintenance contracts.

ERF 124 Messrs James Bowen & Sons Ltd Wester Hailes Works Murrayburn Road Edinburgh THE ERF CAB is said to be the only one of its kind made of sheet moulded compound (SMC), a glass fibre material combining strength and light-weight construction with corrosion-proof and fire-resistant qualities.

A high level of safety is provided by a steel cage which supports the SMC panels, making replacement of individual panels a relatively easy job.

New features of the SP3 cab include a fully opening front grille giving improved access to all bulkhead mounted components. Redesigned step panels and wider opening doors provide easier entry. Inside, the facia has been restyled to accommodate a patented heater package, carpet is moulded over the engine cover and a redesigned cab interior back panel incorporates a storage pocket.

The C-Series tractive unit on show is one of ERF's lightweight range plated to 36 tonnes and powered by the Gardner 6LXCT.

A sleeper-cab model, also plated to 36 tonnes, is equipped with a turbocharged Rolls-Royce 290 engine, and a third vehicle has a Cummins 250 turbocharged engine installed.

Weight-saving features include a lighter air intake gantry and chassis members manufactured from a special drawn steel, resulting in a saving of up to half a ton, which can be reflected by additional payload capacity.
