• A petition signed by 3,700 people asking or the fares application by the East Kent Road Car Co. to be rejected was handed to the Traffic Commissioners last week by Mr. R. Morrisson, representing the Kent Communist Party and Betteshanger branch of the National Union of Miners.
The Commissioners will give their decision in writing.
Mr. Morrisson said the proposed increase together with a further increased fares application by Maidstone and District Motor Services Ltd., on November 19, was a direct attack on living standards and if granted would create hardship for thousands of families.
Representing East Kent, Mr. Charles Fay said the net operating costs had increased by £122,000 since the last application 12 months ago and it faced increases of £174,000 in operating costs, with higher wages, national insurance and fuel tax.
