It is an offence for goods vehicles to leave the UK destined for West Germany unless they carry a valid permit authorising the journey. The only exemption with regard to permits is that goods vehicles having a maximum permissible laden weight (including trailer) not exceeding 6,000kg do not require a permit. However, for vehicles exceeding this weight but when engaged on a particular journey where the unladen weight of the vehicle plus the goods being carried does not exceed 6,000kg, a German "quota free" permit is required. Also, no permits are required for vehicles on journeys using roll-on/roll-off ferries provided goods are collected and delivered within a 25km radius of the respective ferry terminals.

Road restrictions: Goods vehicles exceeding 7.5 tonnes laden weight and goods vehicles towing trailers (regardless of weight) are prohibited from using road on Sundays and public holidays. The ban operates from 0.00hrs to 22.00hrs and is extended to Saturdays (from 7.00hrs) from June till early September.

The ban does not apply to vehicles in transit to or from East Germany and Berlin using the short-distance transit route. Duty-free fuel: Vehicles entering West Germany are permitted a maximum of 50 litres in their tanks, duty free. This limit is due to be increased in July to 200 litres.
