road haulage companies it owns or controls use some 500 depots from which services start or finish, or from which collection and delivery services are operated. Mr. Tom Fraser revealed this in the Commons last week when questioned about the depots used by British Road Services and about the number it was proposed to close.
Changes were made as necessary to cope with differing types of traffic, traffic streams. seasonal fluctuations and other factors, explained the Minister. It was not therefore possible to say how many depots would he opened or closed in the future.
Mr. Fraser gave a blunt " no " when he was asked in the Commons on Wednesday to Rive a general direction to BRS not to close further depots until he had received the views of those directly employed in them.
