Plikington's Wired Glass.

The use of wired glass for i the glazing of engineering workshops and garages s now being adopted by builders to a considerable extent, primarily on account of its fire-resisting qualities. That wellknown manufacturer Pilkington Bros., Ltd.., St. Helens, Lancs., specializes in this class of production,

and it is now marketing a variety of glass for different uses connected with the motor industry.

The wired product is made in three types, viz., roller plate, rough cast, and clear polished plate, and is strongly recommended by architects and engineers, who specify it for use in the roofs of exposed buildings. The, wire netting is embedded in the centre of the glass during the process of manufacture, and the makers claim that in the event of fracture it will under no circumstances splinter or jag, as it is held together by the wire. Another speciality of this famous concern is its prismatic glass, whiA is being used to good purpose for improving the lighting of dark and gloomy offices and workshops. The use of this type of glass would often mean a saving in expenditure, besides being preferable to artificial light, About Avons.

A copy of the latest catalogue issued by the Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd., Melksham, Wilts., is to hand. Amongst other information it contains a number of illustrations of Avon tires as fitted to commercial and passenger-carrying vehicles. A short description or the Avon tire will be of interest to our readers.

Unlike a number of the ordinary grip type of tires, in which a large proportion of the rubber is compressed into steel channels, the Avon band is built up and vulcanized on to a steel rim. This forms the base of the tire, thus allowing the whole of the rubber to absorb shocks and vibrations, at the same time ensuring resiliency and durability. The tire cannot "creep," as the band is hydraulically pressed during the process of manufacture.

From the number of users mentioned in this catalogue One can see that Avon tires are finding • very considerable favour amongst commercial-vehicle users.

" G resol " Lubricants.

The oils and greases as made by the Record Oil Co., Ltd., 101, Leadenhall Street, London, KO., are used to a considerable extent throughout the industry. This company has had much experience in the production of lubricants. The concern not only blends different grades of lubricating oils, but is an actual importer of the crude oil from many. parts of the world. These products arc then distilled and refined at the company's own works, and a variety of grades are thus procured.

New Continental Solids.

A new solid tire has just been put on the masket by the Continental Tyre Co. (Great Britain), Ltd., Thurloe Place, South Kensington, London, S.W., in order to meet the growing demand for this class of production. The maker points out that the special feature of the tire is the extra resiliency it affords. This characteristic renders it particularly suitable for fast-travelling light commercial and passenger vehicles possessing a carrying capacity up to about 25 cwt. The left-hand illustration which we reproduce .shows that the shape of the tire itself gives a certain resiliency, as the rubber employed in its construction is much more resilient than that generally used in solid tires for heavy commercial use. It will supply a much needed want, which becomes more pressing, having regard to the constant and rapid growth of the industrial-vehicle industry. In the matter of running costs it possesses some advantages over the pneumatic tire and is guaranteed for 10,000 miles.

The other illustration which we include is of a steel-studded concave-pattern solid tire, which has also recently been marketed by this well-known manufactu rer
