• Abbey Freight of Chesterton, Staffs, has had a licence application refused because no one from the company turned up before West Midland Deputy Licensing Authority Roger Seymour.

The company had applied for a new national licence for 10 vehicles and trailers. There were representations from four neighbouring residents.

However, Seymour refused to hear objections from Beeches Garages and Davey Roadimmis, on the groundsthat they had no statutory authority to object to the application.

For the two companies, John Martling said they had been too late to get the Road Haulage Association to object in time.

He asked the DLA to take account of the fact that Abbey's founder Mark Cooper, when controlling director of Brick Delivery Services, had admitted at Stoke County Court that Abbey Freight had been trading without a licence since October 1989.
