men from boys says RHA's Eric Voller

• That the new licensing system will bring profound changes to the whole of the road transport industry during the next twelve months was prophesied by Mr Eric W Voller (Cattermoles (Transport) Ltd.), chairman, RHA Metropolitan and South Eastern area, at the annual dinner of the area in London on Monday.

Mr Voller said: "If it works according to plan the new licensing system for lorry owners will certainly have the effect of sorting out the men from the boys.

"We have suffered too much in the past from operators who run their lorries on a shoestring—almost literallyl—and without consideration for the public. They have been a constant threat to the standards of reputable hauliers and to the efforts of the Road Haulage Association. There will be no tears at their departure.

"Road haulage has had to cram into the past 50 years the process of development that has for most industries had several centuries in which to spread itself. In its early beginnings it was almost a cottage industry: it developed as a craft and then a trade; and has now reached full professional standard. The new licensing system will accelerate this process even more and we may expect to see profound changes over the whole of the road transport industry during the next 12 months."
