• Sixty trucks were forced to sail on rival ferry operators' ships when the crew of a Cork Swansea Ferries (CSF) vessel was deemed unfit to sail for the third time since March.
Four sailings were lost on 5 June after the MV City of Cork crew failed to pass safety drill tests once again.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency stopped the vessel from leaving Swansea after its East European and Greek crew failed a random safety inspection.
Hellenic Mediterranean Lines owns the ship and provides the crew. The crew passed fresh tests on 7 June and the ship is once more sailing on schedule—but talks continue with the safety authorities.
According to CSF, legal responsibility for complying with the International Safety Management Code lies with the owners, not the operators.
CSF wants a new management structure to allow it input into the way the safety code is operated on-board.
The Greek owners now plan to appoint a UK-based representative to support their management of the safety code.
