Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Members of the Society of Motor Auctions have been urged by its chairman, Paul Manton, to make better use of fax machines in an attempt to curb fraud and deception by dishonest traders.

Manton says one of the main benefits of membership of the Society is the central register of information described as "the best system in the motor auction industry today". It con tains up-to-date information on stolen vehicles, hire purchase and organised cheque fraud.

"Recently three of our members suffered a substantial fraud and this could have been reduced by the immediate use of our CR1 and maybe the culprits could have been caught in the act," says Manton.

He says about half of the 38 SMA members have fax machines and he urges those who have not to seriously consider installing one. "If used quickly and efficiently, the CRI can not only benefit members but also assist the authorities, especially the police, in apprehending dishonest traders. The installation of a fax machine by each member enabling very quick communication of information would greatly increase efficiency."
