Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FRONT corner marker lamps for trailers and semis may be fitted under the trailer body as well as on the side or at the front: that is the substance of amendments to the Road Vehicles Lighting (Long Vehicles and Trailers) Regulations 1963 laid before Parliament yesterday., The amendments also exclude loads carried on artics from the regulations requiring side marker lamps on combinations carrying supported loads. The whole trailer lighting regulations, including the new amendments, take effect on July 24.

Alterations to paragraph 10 of the original regulations make it clear that no part of the trailer shall obscure the light required to be shown to the front and to the side. The amendments also state that, with this proviso, parts of the trailer on the same side as the lamp(s) may project outwards up to 20 in. beyond the outer edge of the lamp's illuminated area, so long as this projection is behind the lamp or, if in front, is more than 5 ft. from the ground. This 20-in, projection is allowed only if the lamp is between 3 ft. and 5 ft. from the foremost part of the trailer (excluding drawbar and any part of the trailer which is more than 5 ft. from the ground) and any projections lower than 5 ft. in front of the lamp(s) must not extend outwards more than 12 in.

A comprehensive explanation of the new regulations was included in the March 15 issue of The Commercial Motor.
