Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AS a result of a recently concluded _ agreement between The Holset Engineering Co. Ltd., Turnbridge, Huddersfield, Yorks, and the Schwitzer Corporation of Indianapolis, Holset is to manufacture and market thermostatically controlled fan drives in the U.K. These units are already fitted as standard to vehicles manufactured in the U.S.A.

Two types of unit—they are generally called modulated fan drives—are available. The first uses the engine coolant temperature to regulate the fan speed whilst the second uses the temperature of the air after it has passed through the radiator, In both cases the control element is integral with the drive and no external controls or power sources are required.

The drives operate on simple principles. Torque is transmitted from the input shaft to the fan by the shearing of a fluid film between input and output plates in a fluid-filled housing. The control element which reacts to changes in engine coolant or air temperature (depending on the type used) varies the 'fluid 'film thickness between the plates and so varies the fan speed.

This modulated fan drive permits significant reductions in power consumption. It has been compactly designed so that it is interchangeable with conventional fans.
