Southport refuses to license motor chars-a-banes to ply for hire.

Five of the Eastbourne de-Dion motorbuses have had their gearboxes fitted with ball bearings in place of the original plain ones. It is stated that the change has been attended with very-satisfactory results.

The Compagnie Generale &Omnibus et d'Autobus de Constantinople has been formed to establish and work services of motor and horse omnibuses all over Turkey, and especially in Constantinople, under the special licence of the Turkish Government.. The capital is £45,000 (Turkish).

An application, to the Motor 'Bus Committee of the Eastbourne Corporation, by Mr. Arnold F. Hills, the chairman of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., for permission to run six motor coaches between Eastbourne and Hastings, was refused on the ground that sufficient facilities exist already.

A Long "Half-day" Trip.

Last Saturday the employes of the Wandsworth and Putney Gas Light and Coke Co., Ltd., held their annual outing and athletic sports at Clewer, Windsor. The party were taken from the company's offices to Clewer via Wimbledon, Kingston, Hampton Court and Staines in four de-Dion motorbuses, which were detailed for this duty from the Mortlake depot of the L.G.O.C. The trip was a half-day one, the outward journey commencing at 1.30 p.m. Clewer was reached

at 4 p.m. The return journey was successfully terminated at 11 p.m.

Effect of Competition.

We have already referred to the special reduction which has been made in the Sunday rail fares from Bromley (S.F. and C. Railway), following the motorbus competition. The toe& council is now asking the company for third-class season tickets, a general reduction in season and ordinary fares, for a new and larger station, etc.

A curious result of the withdrawal of large numbers of regular horse-bus services by the principal London company, is the re-commencement of operations by free-lance owners of these obsolete vehicles. This unlooked

for development is discussed in the editorial columns of our first page.

Pullman Bus for Estate Work.

A 90 h.p. Charron Pullman motorbus is running daily, in accordance with printed time table, in connection with the Park Langley Estate, Beckenham, Kent. Residents on the estate and visitors are taken to and from Beckenham Junction railway station, a little over a, mile distant. This bus is fitted up with comfortablyupholstered Pullman chairs, and it holds twelve passengers. The wheels are shod with " K.T. " tires.

Suburban Chars-a-Bancs.

Scotland Yard has refused to license a Union Jack motor char-a-basics which was presented, for examination and trial, by Mr. T. Capon, of Downe, Kent. The reasons cited were that the axle width was slightly in excess of the maximum allowed by the regulations, whilst the ground clearance was slightly below the limit. Mr. Capon, however, informs us that he has another machine in band, and that it will be presented for licensing within a few days.
