Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

business using mini or midi skip trucks. Can you tell me what licences and insurance I would need?

A If the skip truck you propose to operate has a plated gross weight over 3.5 tonnes you will require an Operator's Licence to use it to carry for hire or reward or in connection with your trade or business.

If its permissible maximum weight is not over 7.5 tonnes it can be driven on a Category B (or old Group A) driving licence. But if it exceeds 7.5 tonnes a Category C (or class 2 or 3 HGV) licence will be required.

Like any other motor vehicle used on a road, the user of the truck will have to be covered by a policy of insurance in respect of third party risks and it will have to be taxed at the goods rate of vehicle excise duty. We suggest that you also take out some kind of general liability insurance in respect of risks which arise off the road or through the type of loads you would carry.

As it is likely that the vehicle would be used to carry waste you would also have to inquire about registering as a waste carrier with your area waste regulation authority.
