He added "that as guardians of the Treaty of Rome the Commission had a duty to ensure that the law of Europe was adhered to, and that in the course of the next few weeks the British and Irish tachograph situation would require to be studied by the new Commissioners."
The spokesman said that the Commission required to look not only at the legal but also at the psychological aspect, that they were there to build Europe not to break it down into separate units.
Indications are that Britain will be called to account before the spring of this year.
