Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE is no convincing commercial case for returning Freightliners to British Rail, according to the chairman of the National Freight Corporation, Sir Daniel Pettit.

Speaking to the West Mid land Section of the Chartered Institute of Transport, Sir Daniel said he saw the NFC being essentially involved in the throughout movement of freight by road and rail, ,or inland waterway, with extending involvement in sea and air movement.

He went on to emphasise the NFC's interest in Freightliners by quoting its track record since it became part of the corporation. The progressive improvement during that time, which included a succession of annual record performances, was marred only by the recession and industrial dislocation on the railways in that year, he said.

It had taken some five years to wean Frightliners away from an operational preoccupation to a commercial and marketing thrust, and this impetus must not be lost.

Sir Daniel's speech is reported in News Extra on page 36.
