Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Large Capacity Vehicle (210 cubic ft. capacity), with Ample Body Strength for the Task.

p OR Messrs. Langley and John.-son, the well-known contractors, of 'Slough, two 8-10-ton, hydraulic three-way tipping trailers have been constructed by Foden14, Ltd. The frame, axles, springs and wheels are of ample strength for the work to which the vehicle will be put. The wheels are of caststeel, having been specially designed with curved spokes, and they are shod at the front with' 8-in, giant solid tyres 771 mm. fitting and at the rear with the same section tyre, but of 850 mm. fitting.

The body is built of good seasoned timber OR a steel channel frame; which is suitably braced and cross-membered to withstand_ the strain of tipping 10 tons, for in the Process of lifting all the weight naturally falls on three points of support—the two binges and the head of the ram. The sides and ends of the body are hinged and readily removable, the front being a fixture. The dimensions of the body are 12 ft. long, 7 ft. wide and 2 ft. 6 ins high. It is lined throughout with sheet steel to assist the material to leave the body.

The tipping gear. is unusually_ simple, as it is self-contained on the trailer itself. in front of the body and clearly visible in both of the illustrations is a water tank of quite small capacity. A double-acting water pump is mounted on the front of the forward cross-member of the frame, and is arranged to be worked by hand by means of two levers. The water tank is fixed at a slightly higher level than the pump. Suspended in the frame is a hydraulic cylinder, the head of

the ram of which is secured to a socket in the middle cross-member of the body frame. The pump being set in action by manual labour, water is pumped to the cylinder below the ram, the raising of which lifts the body, an angle of tip of 38 degrees being obtainable when end tipping and of 45 degrees when side tipping. In the course of a test it was found that an 8-ton lgad could be tipped in 1iminute. After the load has been tipped the body is returned to the horizontal by gravity, controlled by checking the flow of the water back into the -tank.

The front wheels are equipped with cam brakes, and provision is . made on the rear wheels for the fitting of the same type of brake should it he required or should it be found at any time desirable to add such brakes to the equipment of the vehicles.
