D Series gets broader basic specifications

• Today Ford announces gross vehicle A'eight increases of up to 0.7 tons on all its :rucks and tippers in the 5 to 13 tons middle range. Also introduced are im'roved basic specifications for the D

;cries. The gvw increases — which &feet most D Series trucks and tippers up o 13 tons gross — are claimed to result ma )ody and payload bonus of up to 22 per :ent. They provide a wider model range — with progressive gvws — in a competitive narket.

The standardization of certain popular iptions on D Series models follows just our months after Ford's decision to offer he Custom Cab as standard equipment. 'he latest higher level of specification on base' vehicles is intended further to im'rove driver comfort ride and durability.

)n most models the changes are confined a springs wheels and tyres although there re axle frame and brake modifications on ertain 10.5-and 11-ton models.

The weight revisions will raise the UK stings of all truck and tipper models from le D0507 to the D1314 by between 0.2 and .7 tons (4 0-1570 1b). Taking into account le revised kerbweights due to the specifistion changes these increases show pay)ad improvements up to 22 per cent on uck models. In some cases Ford model umbers which indicate the vehicle's vw and engine power — have been mended. The D0507 (5.1 tons gvw; 73 bhp) -formerly known as the D200 — has disappeared from the range and is replaced by the new D0607 at 5.8 tons gross.

Specification changes are as follows: E Single-line air/hydraulic brakes replace vacuum servo brakes. (This now eliminates vacuum servo units from all Ford truck production).

0 Standardization of dual-line air/hydraulic brakes on D1210/1211 models in lieu of single-line air/hydraulic. E Front and rear shcok absorbers as standard equipment on all rigid models except at rear of two-spring and fourspring Tandems.

• Spare wheel and carrier standard on all rigid models.

• Two-speed self-park windscreen wipers

replacing single-speed non-self park units. E Power steering standard on all 24 and 28-ton artics.

O Increased standard clutch size on smaller models used for stop-start delivery work (12in. replacing 1 lin; 13in. replacing 12in.).

At the same time Ford has announced a rationalization of the tyre range for D Series models. Those tyres which currently are in very low demand are now

deleted from the range. .

Owing to the upgrading of the specification of some of the lighter vehicles some prices have gone up the actual increase

depending on the nature of the changes made. Some examples of price increases are: the D1414 with the turbo-engine and 182in.-wheelbase has gone up only £14 to £3134; the D1616 179in.-wheelbase truck with the low-rated Cummins engine has risen by £95 to £3692; the DT2417 24-tongvw twin-spring 195in.-wheelbase model for truck use has increased £67 to £5150. At the top end of the range that is the DA2818 28-ton-gcw artic no changes have been made and the price remains at £4042.
