Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FAIRFUELUK (FFUK) is backing Robert Halfon’s crusade against the oil sector as the Conservative MP for Harlow leads a parliamentary debate today (13 September) in the House of Commons, with a motion calling for a full-scale investigation into concerns that there could be uncompetitive practices by oil firms.

Through his PetrolPromise campaign, Halfon (pictured) and his team have compiled a 19-page dossier of evidence alleging that oil companies are taking Britain for a very expensive ride.

In the It’s Oil Right for Some document, a whistleblower oil trader claims the Financial Services Authority and Office of Fair Trading (OFT) should be asking ‘why is the London market distorted, with prices kept artificially high?’ and ‘who is benefitting

from this market manipulation?’ “The full statement by the oil trader is dynamite,” said Peter Carroll, FFUK founder. “This man is prepared to give evidence to the OFT so we need to go big on this. We are sharing information with Robert and his team, and Robert is our FFUK champion in parliament. Our hope from today’s debate is that the government will appoint a regulator to make sure there isn’t a cartel in the UK oil market.” Last week the OFT announced a six-week evidence-gathering exercise to identify whether there was scope for a full investigation into the petrol and diesel sector. Findings are due in January 2013.

● CM will be reporting both sides of the debate from parliament in next week’s issue.
