• The harmonisation of road and fuel taxes will be discussed by the EC in Brussels next week. Germany is expected to press for more road tolls, and the UK is believed to have "expressed an interest" in tolls. Questions to be resolved in Brussels include harmonisation of road tolls — French drivers can reclaim tolls paid on French roads — and whether fuel and vehicle excise revenues should be spent on toll roads.
A Community-wide standard fuel-duty rate of 260ECU (182) per 1,000 litres is being suggested — 21% below the UK level.
