A PPLY1NG for four additional picking-up points on their extended tours, Feather Bros. (Tours), Ltd.; Bradford, claimed at Leeds, last week, that if the request were granted, their customers would be saved time and expense. They sought a new licence for feeder services to add Huddersfield as a picking-tip point, and picking-up points at Castleford, Pontefract and Wakefield.
Objectors to the Huddersfield application were Huddersfield and Halifax Joint Omnibus Committees and Shearing's Tours (Manchester), Ltd.
For the applicants, Mr. J. M. Barr said the object was to simplify the licences and to hold as few as possible. Feather's at present had two feeder services between Halifax and Bradford and Brighouse and Bradford, and Huddersfield would be an entirely new picking-up point.
They operated 25 tours, and their
licence enabled them to use 12 coaches from Bradford. Mrs. Margaret Hook, a director of the company, in charge of tours, said that they already carried passengers from Huddersfield.
Mr. Frank Robinson, a director of Shearing's said that they had been licensed to pick up in Huddersfield since just after 1930, and had provided a comprehensive system of tours. If the application were granted, Shearing's might lose all their Huddersfield traffic.
Mr. H. Backhouse, for Shearing's, described the proceedings as "a battle for our Yorkshire existence and for the jewel in our crown." Mr. Michael Scott, for Halifax and Huddersfield J.O.C., pointed out that there were already good stage services in Halifax, Brighouse and Huddersfield.
Maj. J. S. Eastwood, chairman of the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, promised a decision on the application as soon as possible.
